Finding – and keeping – the ideal College of Technology student

Identifying the challenges of bringing in the “ideal” College of Technology student and retaining them in our college once they arrive is the key task of the Strategic Plan Recruitment and Retention Leadership Team.

Duane Dunlap, associate dean of statewide technology and engagement, is serving as team co-leader. He shared a bit of the team’s work and offered some insight into the challenges and opportunities ahead.

Getting to know Matt McKillip, director of research relations

Matt McKillip

Matt McKillip had a long and varied career before becoming the college’s director of research relations in July 2009. From serving as mayor of Kokomo, Ind., to founding and running two high-tech firms, to working internationally with Proctor and Gamble, Matt has built a resume full of innovation and a Rolodex full of industry contacts. A graduate of Purdue’s computer and information technology program, he was named a Distinguished Technology Alumnus in 2005.

Hank Kraebber and Sharon Kraebber received the Gold and Black P Award from the John Purdue Club earlier this year.

Seeking CoT student stories

The college's student recruitment efforts are the most effective when its students and young alumni tell their stories of success. Finding those stories has proven to be the biggest challenge, said Jason Mucher, director of communications.

"We are looking for the poster children of the college, those who best exemplify the ideal College of Technology student and alumni," he said. "Who is excelling in the classroom, in the lab, in an internship, in a career, or in life?"

Ambassadors collecting donations for Food Finders Food Bank

Ellen Zouras and Kyle Hannon load food donations to be delivered to Food Finders Nov. 23.

The College of Technology Student Ambassadors are sponsoring a food drive through December 3 to benefit Food Finders Food Bank of Lafayette. The Food Bank serves thousands of families throughout Indiana.

Four MET students receive AFS scholarships

Four students in the mechanical engineering technology program have received scholarships from the American Foundry Society, Indiana chapter. During a chapter meeting last week, Brad Schrock received the Cartwright Scholarship. Brett Walden, Josiah Evans and Justin Norris received the Kunkel Scholarship.

Purdue Marketing and Media is seeking nominations of students to be featured in the popular “5 Students Who“ series of web-based profiles.

Deadlines approach for Ph.D. fellowships

Applications and nominations are due soon for several fellowships for Ph.D. students. Purdue’s Graduate School has allocated enough funds for the Bilsland Dissertation Fellowship to provide one 12-month award for Ph.D. students. In addition, the College of Technology has one Andrews or Purdue Doctoral Fellowship available and one Ross Fellowship available for Ph.D. students to be admitted for Fall 2010 or Spring 2011.
