Frequently Asked Questions about Summer Training:

What is an STI?

The STI is a two-week intensive course intending to give you an overview of the PLTW course you will be teaching at your school.  You must arrive at 8 am Monday to load software and to check in.  Classes are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.  Attendance is required at all sessions.  During the training, participants complete a portfolio in order to be certified to teach the course.

How do I register for summer training?

Please go to:  www.tech.purdue.edu/pltw and click on Summer Training for the registration procedure on how to become a PLTW teacher and register for summer training.

Parking passes for STI at Purdue – Kokomo?

You will receive your parking pass at registration.  Park only in student parking lots.

What should I bring?

You should bring a laptop, a scientific calculator, a USB memory stick, and a 10-15 foot Ethernet cable.  An external mouse for your laptop is highly suggested.   The affiliate professor for your class may contact you prior to training about specific needs for your class.

What laptop will I need for STI?

You are required to bring a laptop to STI.  You must have administrative privileges on this laptop so that you may add both hardware and software.  For the current minimum laptop specifications visit the PLTW website at:   http://www.pltw.org/escomputer.shtml

These specifications are a minimum – for new purchases it is recommended that you buy as fast a machine with as much memory as possible to prevent obsolescence in the near future.

Where can I view a sample of the PLTW curriculum?

To view the PLTW curriculum, go to: http://www.pltw.org/sampcurr.shtml

Can I use the STI as professional growth points to renew my Indiana teachers license?

Yes, per the Indiana Division of Professional Standards “Teacher Professional Growth Plan Development and Reporting Manual” (May, 2003), each hour of the STI counts as one (1) professional growth point.  Simply attach a copy of your PLTW STI Certificate of Completion to your  “Teacher’s License Renewal Report”  when you submit it.  Additional information may be obtained at: http://www.doe.state.in.us/dps/renewal/growth/teacher.html

Can I get graduate credit for STI?

Graduate credit is available at additional cost for Purdue PLTW two-week STI courses. Each course is three credit hours.  Graduate credit will be registered on June 22nd for the June 15-26 session, and July 13th for the July 6-17 session. Please be prepared to pay at that time. To make other arrangements, please contact Robin Cunningham at rec@purdue.edu or 765-494-2975. The tuition for graduate credit is:

$832.65 plus $55 graduate application fee* (Indiana residents)

$2313.75 plus $55 graduate application fee* (out of state)

* Application fee is waived only if you have paid the application fee thru Continuing Education.
