Computer Graphics Technology (CGT)

What is Computer Graphics Technology?
The information age has arrived with the mainstream adoption of computer graphics and digital technology throughout business and industry. The seemingly limitless applications of computer graphics are creating the need for individuals who are highly skilled in the technology of computer graphics and broadly educated in related interdisciplinary skills: technical problem solving, graphic database management, applied graphic programming skills, graphic design, motion-based computer graphics, interactive media design and development, and 2D and 3D modeling and animation.
Purdue University's Computer Graphics Technology (CGT) program prepares visually oriented students who are interested in creating and managing the production of computer graphics for a wide range of industries. Students work in computer labs developing their graphics skills, techniques, concepts, and management ability through individual and team-based projects.
The associate degree (A.S.) program in Computer Graphics Technology is designed to prepare students both for employment as graphics technicians and for advanced study toward Purdue's Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree. Purdue's A.S. graduates work as graphics practitioners to produce engineering drawings, technical manuals, multimedia products, technical illustrations, and web pages. A graphics technician can expect employment in manufacturing, service, and information industries as CAD drafters, illustrators, page layout/designers, and multimedia producers.
After completing the A.S. degree program, students can either continue their studies toward a baccalaureate degree in Richmond in Organizational Leadership and Supervision or Industrial Technology, or toward a degree a degree in Computer Graphics Technology at another campus. Those students who go to West Lafayette to pursue the Purdue B.S. in CGT can study these areas in yet greater depth: interactive multimedia, technical animation, manufacturing graphics, and construction graphics.

Consider studying computer graphics if more than a few of these statements apply to you:
- If you like making pictures, sketching, drawing, or painting.
- If when you look at art, publications, internet pages, animation, video editing sequences, cinematic special effects, video games, or multimedia presentations, you often think to yourself you would like to create such things on your own.
- If you are not intimidated by computers.
- If, when you explain things, you naturally like to include pictures in the explanation.
- If you want to develop the skills necessary to present your ideas persuasively.
- If you want to study/work in a field so interesting that you'll feel like reading about it and thinking about it even after the school/work day is over.
- If you haven't decided in what field you would like to spend your working life. (Until you do decide, you would do well to pick up the communication skills common to virtually all professions, disciplines, industries, and artistic pursuits. When later in life you finally settle upon your main pursuit, your graphics skills will quite likely increase your chances of success.)
