Purdue University College of Technology Anderson-Muncie and Hinds Career Center in Elwood, Indiana are in the process of finalizing a partnership to bring college courses in web programming to high school students from seven school districts in Madison, Grant, Hamilton, and Tipton counties.

Web and Application Development is a two-semester program that equips students with the skills needed to develop web or Windows-based database-driven applications. Students will learn XHTML and CSS for creating web-pages, the C# programming language, and SQL and XML to drive their websites with data. Along the way students will earn high school credits plus up to 12 Purdue credits, equivalent to nearly a full college semester.

computer classFunded in part by a Moving Forward grant from Indiana Workforce Development, the program will provide good transition to postsecondary education both in terms of college credit and in familiarity with expectations for a college course. In addition, class discussions will focus on applications to various career and postsecondary education options, allowing students to better select college majors and careers they will enjoy and in which they will succeed.

"We are excited about the opportunity to work with the fine folks at Hinds Career Center," states Jody Pierce, Assistant Location Director for Purdue CoT Anderson-Muncie. "These are regular Purdue undergraduate courses with the same rigor as delivered at any Purdue campus. The classes will teach students not only web, database, and programming skills but also critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork, and communication skills as expressed through web applications."

The U.S. Department of Labor forecasts that job demand for computer software engineers will increase 48.4% from 2004 to 2014 and that those jobs will rank in the top quartile of earnings. Computerworld magazine has identified customer web applications as a hot job for the coming years. This program will enable students to identify whether these careers are right for them and give them a leg up on college degrees needed to land those jobs.
