Biography:
Kellen Maicher is an interactive media developer and graphic designer currently serving as an Assistant Professor for the Department of Computer Graphics Technology at Purdue University. In his professional experience he has worked as a multimedia project manager and independent new media consultant.
Kellen has been exploring graphics and Web application development for over ten years. For the last eight years he has taught students in the College of Technology how to create everything from concept illustrations to interactive Web applications.
Kellen holds an M.S. in Computer Graphics Technology from Purdue University, as well as a B.S. in both Biology and Computer Graphics Technology. His research interests focus on the assessment and validation of human factors related to computer graphics education and production. His specific interests include interface usability, user-centered design, quality assurance, and performance testing of interactive applications.
His most recent work has focused on effective implementations of Rich Internet Applications (RIAs) for education, including those specifically designed for emerging human-computer interface technologies such as multi-touch computing, mixed-reality streaming video, 3D RIAs, and various mobile devices.
Kellen currently teaches courses in Human Factors and interactive media development. He has developed, taught, or co-taught eleven courses as a faculty member in the Department of Computer Graphics at Purdue University, instructing on a variety of topics related to interactive media including interface design, Web development, multimedia authoring, gaming, and animation.
His experience as a multimedia developer, project manager, and independent consultant has allowed him to bring practical, industry-tested knowledge both to the classroom and to his scholarly activities. He is the recipient of several teaching awards and has been actively involved in the acquisition of gifts and funded projects worth over $500,000. His work has been presented at a variety of national and international conferences and he has lectured at several educational institutions abroad in Russia, Norway, Poland, and China.
Kellen’s service work has included contributions to four departmental committees, eight years as a Purdue Faculty Fellow, and four years as faculty advisor for the Purdue Student Chapter of ACM SIGGRAPH. His external activities include his work as an Adobe Education Leader and as a member of several professional associations including ACM SIGGRAPH, ASEE, and NAIT.
