The mission of the Smart Meter Integration Lab

The mission of the Smart Meter Integration Lab (SMIL) is to promote innovations around smart metering devices to increase efficiency of electric power grid and reduce per capita electric power consumption by integrating modern power electronics, communication technologies, and consumer behavior findings.
Goals
- Display most current technology in residential/commercial smart grid technologies
- Keep the display available to all stakeholders for training and to the public
- Develop secondary applications (hardware) that utilize the features of smart meters
- Conduct applied research to prove system viability for real-world applications
- Conduct short courses for customers
- Prepare students and other stakeholders for Smart Grid innovations
Objectives
An applied research (interdisciplinary) facility will be developed at Purdue in order to:
- study electrical integration issues
- examine communication reliability
- develop a power electronics based power management hardware
- understand consumer decision-making and use of the tech-facility
- demonstrate the capability of technologies in energy efficiency
