About Dr. Kukula:
Dr. Kukula is a Visiting Assistant Professor and a Senior Researcher in the Biometric Standards, Performance and Assurance (BSPA) Laboratory. He has been involved with biometrics research for over six years and has been an active member of INCITS (InterNational Committee of Information Technology Standards) task group M1.5 - Biometric Performance Testing and Reporting since 2003. Dr. Kukula is currently co-editor of ANSI Technical Report – Information technology – Biometric Performance Testing and Reporting – Part 7: Framework for Testing Methodologies for Specific Modalities. In addition to the national biometric work, Dr. Kukula has been a technical expert for the U.S. delegation in ISO/IEC JTC1 SC37 WG5, Biometric Performance Testing and Reporting.

Outside of biometric standards, Dr. Kukula has published his research in an international textbook, 3 refereed journals, and has made over 15 presentations at conferences with published proceedings. He is also a strong supporter of outreach education. During his graduate work he was an adamant was a National Science Foundation Graduate Teaching Fellow in GK-12 Education for two years where he integrated his research in biometrics in a local 8th grade math and science classroom.

His current teaching interests are in:
•    Biometric Technology
•    Automatic Identification and Data Capture (AIDC)
•    Industrial Technology and Distribution
•    Human Factors

His research interest is in biometrics, specifically the Human-Biometric Sensor Interaction, or HBSI, which involves how humans, sensors, and environmental conditions impact the design and underlying performance of biometric devices and systems.

Dr. Kukula is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Human Factors and Ergonomic Society (HFES).

He is also involved with

Some of his other professional activities include:

  • Referee Activity for International Journals
