What is Mechanical Engineering Technology?
Mechanical engineering technology is more than machinery; it is methods, materials, machinery, and manpower coming together to solve industrial problems. It is the application of scientific and engineering principles to questions of product development manufacturing, manufacturing processes, quality control, materials, fluid power, heat power, mechanics, design, and cost analysis.
The primary goal of the department is to provide all graduates with a solid technical foundation which will enable them to adapt readily to a wide variety of careers and equip them with the desire for life-long learning.
The department offers two programs: a two year A.S. mechanical engineering technology program and a two year (in addition to the A.S. degree) Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering technology program.
Mechanical engineering technology concerns the generation, transmission, and utilization of mechanical, thermal, and fluid energy, and the design and production of tools and machines and their products.
Graduates of the A.S. program accept jobs as laboratory technicians, engineering aides, plant maintenance staff, layout staff, production assistants, and technical sales staff. With additional experience they can be promoted to positions such as industrial supervisors, machine and tool designers, technical buyers, production expediters and cost estimators. They also may elect to enter the B.S. program.
The B.S. program in mechanical engineering technology prepares graduates for positions in manufacturing and other technical industries. Graduates of this program fill a wide variety of industrial positions in manufacturing, production, supervision, plant operations, product development, routine design, technical sales and support, facilities engineering, and other related industrial careers.
The A.S. and B.S. programs in mechanical engineering technology are Accredited by the Technology Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (TAC of ABET).
