Curricula - Plans of Study
Mechanical Engineering Technology (MET) encompasses the integration of the methods, materials, machinery, and human resources found in modern industries. Scientific and engineering principles are applied to technical areas that include: product design and development, production, manufacturing processes and their integration, power and control of machinery, materials, quality control, and cost analysis.
The faculty in the Department of Mechanical Engineering Technology is composed of men and women who have significant industrial experience in their area of expertise. Students thus have the opportunity to learn from professionals who have practiced the subject being taught.
The plan of study for the two-year A.S. degree program constitutes the first two years of the four-year B.S. degree program; most students earn both degrees. The first two years (4 semesters) in the plan of study completes the Associate degree (A.S.) requirements. Two additional years (4 semesters) in the plan of study completes the Bachelor's degree (B.S.). Many students come into MET from other programs at Purdue and other institutions as well.
The primary goal of the department is to provide all graduates with a solid technical foundation that enables them to adapt to, and grow in, a wide variety of employment opportunities. The success of MET graduates has emphasized the need to continue with this philosophy.
Graduates of both the A.S. and B.S. degree programs are in great demand by such firms as Saturn, Cummins Engine, Delco Electronics, Square D, Ford, Navistar, Detroit Diesel, General Electric, Johnson Controls, Boeing, General Motors, Kimberly Clark, Caterpillar, SMC Pneumatics, Motorola, Ross Gear, US Steel, Honda of America, Vickers, and Chrysler.
A cooperative education program is available to MET students. Co-op students alternate semesters of relevant work experience with class-room studies. Co-op work sessions provide students with the opportunity to gain on-the-job experience, earn credits toward graduation, and help pay their college expenses.
