JOB SUMMARY: This experienced program manager will direct and lead industry adoption of standards and protocols for an intelligent electrical grid, working closely with member companies and external organizations to define and specify the NEMA member perspective on Smart Grid standards and protocols.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
Investigate current standards and control protocols that support grid operations and determine gaps where new or modified standards need to be developed to modernize the nation’s electricity grid.
Solicit input from electrical manufacturers to define the needs of each equipment category relative to interfacing with the Smart Grid. Develop a consensus set of objectives for the data that will be required.
Serve as NEMA’s technical expert on standards development committees and working groups including, but not limited to, NIST, IEEE, EEI, EPRI, Grid Wise Architectural Council and IEC.
Coordinate protocol specifications and standards based on input from NEMA staff and membership
Keep NEMA staff and designated product sections informed on the progress of the various Smart Grid standards committees and working groups.
Identify the most effective methods for integrating Smart Grid approaches into existing (i.e. legacy) electric grid systems and components.
Act as an engineering consultant to NEMA’s Emerging Technology Panel and Smart Grid related working groups.
ESSENTIAL JOB SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Successful candidate will have:
Ability to lead, coordinate, and work with volunteer committees
Able to work with minimal supervision and be a self-starter.
Excellent program management abilities (i.e., setting and reviewing objectives, coordinating activities across projects, and overseeing the integration of work products and results).
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Requires a minimum of a four-year college degree in computer science, electrical engineering, electronics engineering or related field.
Must have experience developing or deploying communication protocols in any arena
Familiarity with fundamental concepts of power flow and electrical system operations a real plus
Standards development process knowledge and experience helpful.
Legacy systems integration experience helpful
