Two Purdue Polytechnic faculty members were recently elevated to senior member status in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Wenhai Sun and BC Min, both faculty in the Department of Computer and Information Technology (CIT), are now senior members, meaning they will receive a letter of commendation and are now eligible to serve in many IEEE executive volunteer offices.
Senior membership is the highest grade applicants can pursue and requires candidates to be engineers, scientists, educators, technical executives or originators in IEEE-designated fields for 10 years with five years of “significant performance,” as defined by IEEE.
Formed in 1963, IEEE provides members with access to resources, professional networking, discounts and other benefits. Members come from engineering, computing and information technology professions and academic settings around the globe.
Sun said the organization has provided valuable resources that have supported his career development activities.
“Since my Ph.D., I have been deeply engaged in various IEEE-sponsored activities, contributing actively as an organizer, program committee member, author, and reviewer for IEEE conferences and journals. I appreciate those opportunities as they have significantly enriched my professional growth and development.”
Sun plans to use his senior member status to volunteer in IEEE leadership positions where he can help the community grow, further promote STEM initiatives and foster new generations of researchers and technology leaders.
“I am grateful to Purdue Polytechnic for providing me with a stage to advance my career,” Sun said. “The Polytechnic offers vital resources and opportunities that bolster my research endeavors. Additionally, I extend my thanks to our outstanding and collaborative colleagues for their invaluable mentoring and help.”
The IEEE has multiple levels of involvement available, ranging from non-member participation as an affiliate to fellow grade, which recognizes higher distinction in the profession.
