The Campaign for Community

Changing the Economy
              Creating the Future

Indiana University East and Purdue University School of Technology at Richmond
Partners in Change for East Central Indiana and West Central Ohio

The future is here.

The old way of doing things is gone. And with that change, our community must be prepared . . . or be left behind.

We're creating a road map for an energized and innovative economy. Come with us as we create the future for our community - today.

It's About the Changes in Our World...

Are we prepared to survive the economic transformation? After years of reliance on traditional manufacturing, our economy has shifted in a dramatic way. A "knowledge economy" is the new basis for our growth.

In this atmosphere, education is the single most important economic development tool we have. We must prepare our citizens to not only survive, but to thrive in a new economy.

Indiana University East and Purdue University School of Technology at Richmond are partners in providing the necessary tools. With a
strategic infusion of private support, we can create positive results.

By creating solutions that improve the region's quality of life, everyone benefits.

It's About the Changes in Our Area...

"I have seen firsthand the need for companies to upgrade human resources to compete in the changing global market. Much like the companies that need to invest in human resources to stay competitive, the technologies at Purdue University School of Technology at Richmond need to be constantly evaluated and upgraded."

Andrew Bobelenyi , Alcan Composites USA, Inc., is a May 2004 Organizational Leadership and Supervision B.S. grad and holds an A.S. in Mechanical Engineering
Technology.

Indiana ranks as one of the hardest hit states in total number of jobs lost - more than 136,000 in the last four years alone. We can reverse that trend. But we must start now.

A university setting is the incubator for education and training - to start a business, serve the community, or improve the lives of others. Nearly half of all new jobs created in this country will require a degree beyond high school.

The Campaign for Community is about being ready for the challenge. Whether through scholarships, equipment, or laboratories, the goal is to infuse the area with energy. The result will be a region that is growing, thriving, leading the way.

Both Purdue and IU believe that investing in the region is the key to the future.

The jobs of tomorrow will be created by students in the university classroom today.

Our region urgently needs to transform its economy.

Preparing for Tomorrow

A lost job means our citizens need to either retool or move away. You can help us change that environment dramatically.

Contributions will be applied
according to donor designation
to the following:

  • Purdue School of Technology
    Laboratory equipment modifications
    and procurement
  • IU East Nursing and Science
    Program equipment
  • IU East Laboratory update
  • Purdue School of Technology Faculty
    development and research

Undergoing a major expansion, Reid Hospital offers employment to student nurses.

In this rapidly changing economy, there is a shift in the education our students must have to be successful. They must be equipped with skills for the 21st century if we are to maintain a competitive edge. That's where The Campaign for Community comes in.

The needs of the campus range from laboratory equipment and its maintenance to faculty training to expanded facilities. Pursuit of knowledge means our students must have the resources. It is critical to be prepared as we pursue innovative solutions that will address an emerging global, technology-intensive economy.

Internships or apprenticeships don't go far enough.

Creating Jobs

"The skills and knowledge I received at the Purdue School of Technology at Richmond were immediately beneficial in my current job. I depend on Purdue to keep their technology moving forward so that our future does too."

Charles "Doc" Holliday is an
A.S. student in Mechanical
Engineering Technology.

Our Partnerships with the downtown Innovation Center is a means to inspire entrepreneurship.

Traditional methods of exposing students to business are important, but The Campaign for Community aims to create a new, more vibrant culture of thought.

Through the creation of a new Entrepreneurship Center, we encourage student ambitions for making jobs rather than taking them. The Center will provide students with the knowledge necessary to start their own businesses. Specialized classes, internships, and visits to area businesses will not only inspire students, but illustrate that their dreams are within reach.

And there are other opportunities: With equipment upgrades in the Purdue School of Technology, students will have access to laboratories and equipment that could give them the tools to take part in emerging fields by starting companies of their own.

In this way, we are addressing the critical issues of a declining regional economy through partnership with the Purdue School of Technology, the IU programs, and area businesses.

Measuring the quality of life in our community means more than work and advancement.

Bringing Culture

Measuring the quality of life in our community means more than economic survival.

Contributions will be applied according to donor designation to the following :

  • Installation of a new art gallery with state-of-the-art features and climate control
  • Endowment for preservation, restoration, and expansion of the IU East art collection
  • Catalogue of the unique IU East art compilation from around the world

Cultural enrichment is important for each member of our community. IU East boasts the second most valuable art collection in the IU system, with works from the great masters, such as Picasso, to local artists of note. The new Whitewater Art Gallery will stand as a testament to the area's vitality and rich resources. It offers opportunities for education, for instruction, and for outreach.

Better yet, the gallery will serve as a learning laboratory. It will serve as a tool to teach students about the operations of a museum. The Gallery will present opportunities for partnerships with local museums and the community.

In addition to building this state-of-the-art facility, gifts will also go toward the preservation, conservation, and display of the current collections. Part of the legacy of The Campaign for Community is a permanent venue where the public can experience art in all its many expressions.

Student scholarships open the door to achievement.

Advancing Lives

"At IU East there is definitely more one-on-one instruction, and I learned on real equipment as I went through my classes.
I learned skills I will need that have prepared me to pursue an elite cytotechnology program. I am really proud of my IU degree from IU East."

Stephanie McGraw, a 2004 IU East graduate, will enter the IUPUI cytotechnology program in the fall.

Nearly two out of every three students on our campus receives financial aid. Every additional scholarship that is made available is another opportunity for someone who might otherwise forgo a college education or risk being in debt for many years to come. One goal of The Campaign for Community is to allow each person who desires a college degree the opportunity to earn one.

IU East currently holds $3.4 million in scholarship endowment, and just unveiled its new honors program. But with only a small portion of the capital used, the endowment needs to grow substantially to help more students. At the same time, the Purdue School of Technology is starting its own endowment program to increase student access to the campus.

As we increase the number of students who receive financial aid, we sow the seeds of change for our community. You can pave the way for advancing lives by helping fund scholarships.

Contributions will be applied according to donor designation to the following:

  • IU East Scholarship Endowment
  • Purdue School of Technology, Richmond Scholarship Endowment
  • Newly established endowments of donor's wish
  • Growing existing named endowments
