Trustees approve MS degree for BCM

The Purdue University Board of Trustees on Tuesday (July 12) approved, among other programs, a master's degree in building construction management (BCM).

The College of Technology currently offers a BCM specialization within its technology master's degree. The new degree will be more specific to the department.

The Indiana Commission on Higher Education must approve the degree program before it can be implemented.

Free camp in Indianapolis highlights aviation careers, activities

A free, five-day camp at Indianapolis’s Aviation Technology Center will focus on the variety of careers available in the aviation industry.

The Aviation Career Education (ACE) Academy day camp, July 10-15, 2011, is targeted toward high school students. It is sponsored by the Federal Aviation Administration, Purdue’s College of Technology at Indianapolis and Vincennes University. Similar camps are conducted across the country. This is the only one in Indiana.

Students will take field trips around the Indianapolis International Airport, complete hands-on activities, and experience instruction in aviation history and the physics of flight.

Open House for Solar Decathlon home set

The Purdue Solar Decathlon team will host an Open House Saturday, July 2, at the construction site near McCormick Road and State Street. It will be the first opportunity for the public to see and tour the structure.

Rogers consults on young adult cybersafety books

Marcus Rogers, professor of computer and information technology, is the consulting editor of a new series of seven books related to cybersafety targeted toward high school students.

The series includes volumes on:

Cyber Stalking and Cyberbullying
Digital Piracy
Identity Theft
Information Crisis
Internet Addiction and Online Gambling
Living with the Internet

The series is published by Chelsea House, and the books are available on Amazon.

CIT students help in fight against breast cancer

They may not be analyzing genes, conducting clinical studies, or developing new treatment therapies, but the work done by two recent Purdue University College of Technology students may prove to be a key weapon in the battle against one of the most dreaded diseases.

Chris Dix and Phil Schultheis, both 2011 computer and information technology graduates, have been using their skills in database and web application development to create a virtual tissue bank for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Tissue Bank at the IU Simon Cancer Center (KTB). The KTB was created in response to a need articulated by scientists carrying out breast cancer research. It is the only repository in the world set up to collect normal, healthy breast tissue, whole blood, DNA, plasma and serum.

In the News: Fulbright scholars announced for CoT, DIT

Eugene Coyle, head of the School of Electrical Engineering Systems at the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), will be a Fulbright Scholar at the College of Technology during 2011-12.

Mark Shaurette, assistant professor of building construction management, will be a Fulbright Scholar at DIT during the same time.

Able Flight teaches flight, life lessons

It has been a month of discovery, camaraderie and flight. It also has been a month of proving that a physical limitation can be overcome with the right tools.

In its second year on the Purdue University campus, Able Flight has brought four college students to campus to learn to fly. Each has a physical disability that, until now, has precluded them from pursuing an interest or career in aviation. With the help of special aircraft and scholarships from Able Flight, these four students will have light sport pilot certificates after an intensive five-week training period.

Purdue women air racers ready for Classic event

Purdue University students Allison Springer and Chantel Steele will participate in the 34th annual Air Race Classic all women's transcontinental air race from June 21-24.

Weather permitting, the team will leave at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Thursday (June 16) from the Purdue University Airport for the Iowa City starting line. The 2,722-mile race will make stops in Brookings, S.D.; Jamestown, N.D.; Spearfish, S.D.; Rawlins, Wyo.; Alliance, Neb.; Great Bend, Kan.; Borger, Texas; Norman, Okla., and El Dorado, Ark., before ending in Mobile, Ala.
