Assessment Spreadsheet Page
Assessing how well a class has done in meeting course and program outcomes can be very tedious. There is often a large amount of data that must be collected and processed to make an accurate assessment. Tools to automate these activities can make them much more manageable.
Professor Harding developed a spreadsheet tool that automates some of these tasks. It allows the professor to assign an outcome number to each question on each exam, then get summary results of students’ performance: by individual question, by course outcome for each exam, and by course outcome for all of the exams combined. It also tracks lab and quiz/homework grading, and ties everything together to summarize student grades and overall class performance. This facilitates assessment and evaluation, not only of individual course outcomes, but also program outcomes for ABET accreditation purposes.
The spreadsheet's construction and usage are described in detail in his paper, which was published in the spring 2009 edition of the Technology Interface Journal:
A Tool to Simplify Course, Program, and ABET Assessment Activities (scroll down to the paper in the contents window on the left side of the web page, then select either the PDF or HTML link to see the paper).
The spreadsheet includes three interconnected worksheets, one each for exam details, lab details, and a main page that aggregates summary information, as shown in the screenshots below.
